Why Every Colorado Pool Needs a Certified Operator

Under Colorado regulation 5 CCR 1003-5, Section 4.9, every public or semi-public pool in the state — HOAs, condos, hotels, resorts, rec centers, fitness clubs, and apartment complexes — must have a current Certified Pool Operator on staff or under contract. The PHTA CPO is the most widely accepted credential under this rule.

  • Required for every public or semi-public pool in Colorado — Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, Boulder, and statewide
  • Accepted certification under CDPHE Rule 4.9 (CPO, AFO, or equivalent)
  • Colorado explicitly permits virtual/online delivery — no travel required
  • Daily pool chemistry log requirements reinforced in the course
  • Valid for 5 years — recognized in all 50 states

Code of Colorado Regulations

The owner or operator of each public pool or semi-public pool shall have on staff or under contract for each facility a current Certified Pool Operator (CPO), an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), or an NSPI Tech I or other approved certification program.

Colorado CPO FAQs

Does Colorado accept online CPO certification?

Yes. Unlike a handful of states that require in-person delivery, Colorado accepts fully online CPO certification under CDPHE's 5 CCR 1003-5 regulations. You can complete the entire program from anywhere in the state — Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, Boulder, Grand Junction, Pueblo, or any mountain community — without traveling.

Who in Colorado is required to have a CPO on staff?

Any facility operating a public or semi-public pool: HOAs and condo associations, hotels and resorts (big across the Rockies), apartment complexes, rec centers, fitness clubs, municipal pools, and property management companies. The CPO can be either on-staff or under contract — so pool service companies can cover multiple facilities, but at least one current CPO must be tied to each pool.

How long does the course take?

The self-paced online course typically takes 6–8 hours. Many students complete the course and exam in the same day. The live Zoom review and exam session is approximately 5 hours.

What if I don't pass the exam?

No stress! Your registration includes 3 exam attempts. Our overall pass rate is 98%, and Chad will work with you to make sure you're prepared. Most students pass on their first try.

Do I need to travel anywhere?

No. The entire course and exam are 100% online. The review session and exam are conducted via Zoom from wherever you have an internet connection in Colorado.
